Tenerife is one of those places that manages to surprise you every time you visit. It’s known for its year round sunshine and beach resorts, but beyond the all inclusive hotels lies a completely different side to the island. One filled with volcanic hikes, quiet fishing villages, and viewpoints that feel like the edge of the world.
Exploring the Island’s Wild Heart
Start your trip in the centre of the island, where Mount Teide dominates the skyline. Standing over 3,700 metres tall, it’s Spain’s highest peak and hiking it feels like walking on another planet. Even if you don’t trek all the way to the summit, the Teide National Park offers surreal landscapes of black lava and twisted rock formations that are worth exploring.
Coastal Towns and Local Life
Once you’ve had your fill of mountain air, head south toward Los Cristianos or El Médano. While Los Cristianos has plenty of life and restaurants, El Médano is more relaxed, a haven for surfers and locals who prefer tapas by the water instead of nightlife.
If you’re renting a car, drive up to the northern coast and visit Garachico. A historic town rebuilt after a volcanic eruption in 1706. Its natural lava rock pools are the perfect place for a dip.
Where to Watch the Sunset
There’s no better way to end a day in Tenerife than by watching the sun sink into the Atlantic. My favourite spot is from the cliffs of Los Gigantes, where the sky turns gold and the ocean glows beneath you.
Travel Tips
- 🗓️ Best time to visit: March to June or September to November. Warm weather without the crowds.
- 🚗 Getting around: Rent a car if you want to explore properly. Public transport is limited outside tourist zones.
- 🍽️ Don’t miss: Grilled octopus, papas arrugadas (salted potatoes), and a cold Dorada beer.
Tenerife might be a small island, but it’s full of contrasts, volcanic landscapes, ancient forests, hidden beaches, and a laid-back island rhythm. Whether you’re here for a long weekend or a month, you’ll leave already planning your next visit.
